Asta Winckler

15 March 1934 - Still smiling after her seven-and-a-half-hour swim from Robben Island.
Asta Winckler was a Danish-American woman who became the 4th person to complete the Robben Island crossing on 23 October 1934. She also completed a Channel crossing in 1938.
She came to Cape Town to visit family in Bantry Bay, from New Jersey, where she was the state breaststroke champion.
